Kids Talk Radio Cabo Verde Global Warming and Climate Change Press Conference: Long Beach, California City Hall
The 8th. Districts Long Beach Councilwoman Rae Gabelich made it possible for the second Cabo Verde and USA Kid’s Talk Radio Press Conference about Global Warming to take place at City Hall in the city of Long Beach. The two mayors from the Cabo Verde Islands were officially welcomed to the City of Long Beach, California.
On Tuesday, November 18, 2008, the Mayor of Brava, Sr. Camilo Goncalves and the Mayor of Fogo, Sr. Eugenio Veiga, visited California and held a press conference with Kids Talk Radio at Long Beach’s Civic Center. Deputy Joao Alves and interpreter Armindo Goncalves accompanied these officials from the Republic of Cape Verde; who are also from Cape Verde. One student reporter from Wilson High School and one student reporter from Poly High School were selected to attend the conference and interview the visitors with their own questions as well as some questions from students in the state of Georgia and students in New York. The press conference covered important issues that are occurring in the Cape Verde islands and that have occurred as well. The Cape Verde Islands are a group of islands located in the North Atlantic Ocean, North of Senegal on the coast of Western Africa. The islands became independent from Portugal in 1975 and have demonstrated to be one of Africa’s most stable democratic governments since 1990. The Republic of Cape Verde has been faced with many weather and climate struggles throughout the years. When asked if they have noticed any changes in climate in the past three years, they responded: “From my perspective, nothing extraordinary has been witnessed in cape Verde that would lead me to believe there has been a dramatic climatic change in Cape Verde. But on the other hand we have noticed slight changes in climate patterns. We are now witnessing, although at a small scale, tornadoes or heavy episodic periods of rain that only happened thirty to forty years ago in the Cape Verde islands; we are seeing these phenomenons reoccurring again. For example my island, island Brava is perhaps the most temperate in terms of mild climate, beautiful climate, comfortable climate… but more recently, we have been noticing that the island of Brava, the climate is much, much hotter than it used to be before,” stated Mayor Goncalves. “So that is one of the evidences that we have, because it is something we can feel and witness So then yes, although very small, but it is there and it is notable.” Mayor Veiga elaborated to Mayor Goncalves answer, “We live a global world, and so any global change has a global impact like a trickle-down-effect. Cape Verde is a small country in terms of geography therefore it’s very much insolated. For example, when [I] returned from my studies [in Romania, where I went to college], I felt so hot. I had never felt so hot before. The impression I get, is the temperature increased over time.” Cape Verde has been a drought-ridden place for many years throughout history, but as Mayor Veiga later reported, from June 2008 until now, there has been an increase in rain. This is great for the islands, but the inhabitants seem a bit afraid. “We never expected it!” interpreter A. Goncalves added. Drought is believed to have been a cause of many fatalities in the past at the Cape Verde Islands. Mayor Veiga introduced his ideas and opinions on the subject. “We didn’t directly experience this period of famine and drought.” The period was during the colonial rule of the Portuguese, and Mayor Veiga believes that the unpredictable weather and the political standing of the islands caused the drought and its outcomes. The islands at the time were a colony that was dependent on foreign countries for food and supplies. Because this was about the same time of World War II, supplies were short. All the components added along with the natural drought increased the number of casualties around this period. During this time, the people affected by the drought and famine were so desperate that in the capital of the Cape Verde Islands, Praia, located on Santiago Island; many people went into an executive office building to beg for food. The building became overwhelmed with people in a very short period of time, that the entire building collapsed and killed all of the people in the building. “It was a dark period of time,” Deputy Joao Alves lamented. The dark times may have been an unfortunate period but in many cases it also served as a teacher for the Republic to be able to deal with other obstacles as they present themselves. “Based on oral history, oral information handed down to me by my grandparents, the volcano [located in Fogo] erupts about every hundredth year. I think it was in the late 1950’s we had a major volcanic eruption,” Deputy Joao Alves stated. The republic cannot conduct many studies nor has much information recorded because of their lack of equipment and funds. NASA has a weather station located in Fogo and most of the information becomes available through NASA’s station and research. The Cape Verde islands have many coral reefs that are inhabited by unique plants and animals only found in the Cape Verde reefs. Many scientists are conducting research for medicines with specimens from the reefs and some believe that global warming is hurting the reefs. The mayors explained what action is being taken to protect the reefs and their rare occupants. “Today, the government is introducing more and more legislation in that area. For example every alien has a specific [natural protection] area,” Mayor Goncalves stated. “There is also a strong political and educational component that comes from this, the need to educate people on these natural resources.” Cape Verde also made an agreement with Holland and other countries to protect and promote the need to preservation these natural wonders. There is also a fifteen-year plan to have a technical team make sure the reefs are protected. Unfortunately, there aren’t enough funds to put the plan in action; the plan would cost about one million dollars, of which only fifteen percent is available. Cape Verde prevents pollution as much as possible, there is little to no pollution from manufactures. They take a preventative approach on just about everything. They try to educate the children about the issues at a young age. As far as protection goes, changes have been made. In the past, people would eat turtles, which led to the endangerment of the species. Now, if a civilian is caught with a turtle, he or she will be fined. “No one messes with the turtles.” Interpreter A. Goncalves stated. Later, after the interview he added, “The U.S. is helping by patrolling our waters so that they aren’t being over-fished by foreign countries.” Apparently, the U.S. Navy makes sure that the waters aren’t being fished because in the past, countries such as China, have fished in them without Cape Verde’s knowledge. As far as what the United States can do to help the Cape Verdeans preserve and continue to do well is to be able to provide aid in case of a tsunami, volcano eruption, and other natural disasters. They also wish the United States to pair up with Cape Verde and conduct further studies to document and preserve the environment. They are also interested in student exchange programs and partnerships between schools. There is also a lot of poverty on the island and the mayor’s are hoping that with help from the United States and other foreign countries poverty may be eliminated. The Cape Verde island officials visited California with hopes of building a relationship with the United States and to educate others about the needs of preserving the natural resources in the vulnerable islands.

Global Warming becomes Global
Some might wonder what the city of Long Beach and a volcanic chain of islands off the coast of West Africa have in common. Since Cape Verde is a place where unexpected climate change can mean the difference between life and death, this nation is directly affected by global warming. On November 18, it was the pleasure of the city of Long Beach to welcome two mayors from the Cape Verde islands. The Mayor of Fogo, Sr. Eugenio Veiga, and the Mayor of Brava, Sr. Camilo Goncalves, began their weeklong trip to the state of California by answering environmental questions. These questions from US students were delivered by the founder of Kids Talk Radio, Mr. Bob Barboza and two Long Beach High School reporters. “We live in a global world…. (Cape Verde) can feel the trickledown effect.” says Mayor Sr. Eugenio Veiga, “Even islands that never get rain are getting it, and it is bad because it is scaring people.” Cape Verdeans rationalize these unusual occurrences by considering the fact that they could possibly be a participant in a climate cycle. These unusual climate occurrences are increasingly important because Cape Verde is heavily dependent on agriculture. This magnifies the effects of drought on the native population. “Everything we do has a preventative measure…we aim at educating kids at a very young age” says Mayor Veiga. Cape Verde’s unique approach to solving the climate problem is to educate children as to the importance of the environment and climate change. Appreciation of natural resources is a theme that is also reiterated by laws preventing actions such as catching a sea turtle. Dramatic national resources such as a large reef necessitate a policy of strict protection. It is this national emphasis on the environment that causes Cape Verde to dedicate a section of each international meeting to environmental issues. With a major concern about poverty alleviation, it is funds that limit the necessary research and enforcement of environmental activities. As a result, the Cape Verde mayors believe one of the best actions the US could take would be to participate in a joint research project in Cape Verde. This historic meeting is a major step for the global political activism that is needed for environmental cooperation.

Kids Talk Radio®
Getting Kids Excited About Learning
A Program by Bob
Barboza, Super School University
Kids
Talk Radio is a creative high motivational learning program that helps students
to listen, speak, read, write, and compute. Our program is designed for
students in grades 4 through 8. Kids Talk Radio was designed for special needs
and gifted and talented students. The program is currently being expanded to
include bilingual and at-risk students in grades 9 through 12.
Teachers
and students are provided with a Kids Talk Radio Station Manager’s Kits. Each
kit has all the tools you need to train radio reporters, student researchers,
sound effects engineers, hardware specialist, hardware specialist, DJ’s and
station managers.
Kids
Talk Radio provides a wonderful opportunity to integrate singing, playing
musical instruments, and using the human voice as a sound effects machine. We
created a student sound effects choir and are teaching our students about how
sound effects were made during the golden days of old time radio.
To
insure that students produce quality work suitable for radio broadcasting, they
must complete a training course to help them to perform at a Kid’s Talk Radio
oral reading and writing rubric level of five or six. Students have individual
learning plans and they produce Podcast and Kid’s Talk Radio Z Casts® for the
Internet, iPods and school Intranet radio stations.
Students
are trained to build custom radio station databases for instant web publishing
and radio station job simulation projects. Teachers and students use “Database
Projects for Kids” and FileMaker Pro for Kid’s Talk Radio learning projects.
Our
students have various learning styles. We use Journalist in a Box programs to help meet the unique needs of
our students. Journalist in a Box and Brain Cogs helps our students to develop
personalized strategies that help them to work more productively sticking to
tight deadlines. Students have to study hard to complete their writing and oral
reading assignments. BrainCogs helps the Kid’s Talk Radio News Teams to
organize information, remembering reading passages, prioritizing news
information, shifting attention skills, and checking their news broadcasts
before turning in their work.
To
help our students with the difficult job of writing for Kid’s Talk Radio, we
use Journalist in a Box and Essay Express. This program works along the
side our schools writing program, the Kids Talk Radio Graphic Organizers, and
Writer’s Workshop. Essay Express does a good job getting our students ready to
write the short essays that are needed for the Kid’s Talk Radio Broadcasts in
science, social studies, mathematics, sports news, local news, and world
current events. Essay Express provides between 4 to 6 hours of useful
self-paced instruction. The programs high motivational design increases
student’s time on task and more importantly students stick with the program.
This allows Kid’s Talk Radio teachers to work with other students that need
valuable teacher time for story editing. Super School University and Fable
Vision’s research-based and instructionally sound learning solutions help the
Kids Talk Radio teachers to reach out to more students. Thier products are
like having an extra teacher in a box that you can use to individualize
instruction.
A
Kids Talk Radio school tour is scheduled for September, 2010-2011. Barboza
will be visiting schools demonstrating how to build radio stations, sound
effects labs and teaching students and teachers how to create special Podcasts
and Z Casts © Kid’s Talk Radio. For more information on how to get involved,

What is the Super Sub
Program?
Imagine, the phone rings and
the school is alerted that the Super Subs are on the way. This means that the school principal
can use the school day for planning with all the other teachers at the
school. There is no cost to the
school.
If the principal wants to
help with raining test scores she can help the teachers to plan better so that
they can teach better. The
principal can spend her sub money on something else.
The principal and all of her
teachers remain on the school site.
The Super Subs take over all of the classrooms and at the end of the day
they all perform in one big school assembly.
If you want to see the Super
Subs in action take a look at our mini-documentary.
Visit on Super Subs page: http://KidsTalkRadio.PNN.com
Now you can hear the
interviews, view the photos, watch the videos, and contact us for more details.
How are the Super Subs
different from regular substitute teachers?
Super Subs are cross-trained
in the visual and performing arts.
The Super Sub team is made up of school administrators, teachers, journalist,
animators, musicians, choreographers, software designers, computer programmers,
business CEO’s and other members of the community. We take over the school for one day teaching period by
period.
The Super Sub Program is
available for K through 8 and 9 through 12. You can find a very special article about the Super Subs in

Kid’s Talk Radio Needs More Teachers and Students
The Kids Talk Radio/PNN News is expanding. We had to ask the Santa Barbara Teen Press to lend us a hand to cover some of our news assignments at the San Francisco Mac World Expo. We did not have enough reporters to get the job done. The student reporters got into the keynote address and had a chance to meet Steve Jobs.
One of our big news assignments this month was to interview Kenny G, and the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus staff, at the 2008 NAMM Show. The Teen Press team was still editing news and heading back to school while the Kid’s Talk Radio staff was on the way to the 2008 NAMM Show in Anaheim, California.
We are now looking to train more student journalists. In addition, we want to reach out to other news teams and to publish your content on PNN News.

Why are Kids Talk Radio Educational News Projects an important educational tool to unite students and
teachers from around the world?
The Kids Talk Radio News Team is always looking for ways to keep kids
excited about learning. We want to do
what we can to decrease the drop out rates in schools across America and
across the world.
The motivation to create Kids Talk Radio websites partly comes from an
organization called Kids Talk Radio/PNN. While the idea and the desire to make
a difference were firmly planted in the minds of the members on our Kids Talk
Radio Team, a project based international website with no funding, no
leadership, no syndication, and no name recognition would get nowhere. When we
heard about PNN from our teacher and other classmates at our school, we became
determined to make our project based learning Kid’s Talk Radio website about
fables and music from Cabo Verde a great step forward in creating a wonderful awareness
of the Cabo Verde people and its wonderful music. Kid’s Talk Radio/PNN is a
great organization that inspires students to think, listen, speak, read, and
write, connect, create, and share, stimulating them to make websites concerning
any issue or topic they desire. These websites and special integrated websites
then become a resource for all students coming after us, and each year more Kid’s
Talk Radio team participants add to our new knowledge database. Kid’s Talk
Radio/PNN offers students across the world the opportunity to connect with one
another and to learn together with people of different cultures and points of
views. This high motivational and creative international learning project is a
wonderful way to help towards world peace and understanding.

How much math and science can you learn from building and playing the drums?
We are asking all the right questions and we are getting answers from a team of experts. Our students are going to directly benefit. When we integrate music with math and science our students end up with a deeper understanding of what they are doing. That deeper understand helps students to apply what they are learning to different situations that are important to them. We want our students to become excited about learning and to become life long learners. Keep checking our site for updates involving Database Projects for Kids-Kid?s Radio. You will see the results of a team of creative teachers and software designers in action.

Kid's Talk Radio Projects: Mathematics and Drumming
Innovative Programs for Gifted Students
For the past two year Super School has been experimenting with mathematics and music. Our team is fascinated with the potential for learning. We wanted to find out just how much math and science goes into building and playing a drum set. This high motivational project turned out to be just what Super School wanted. We are constantly looking for new ways to integrate academics into high motivational learning projects. Our students are doing a better job at understanding how math and science go hand in hand. We are very excited about this new hands on approach. It is wonderful to find creative ways to get music back in our K through 8 schools. More information about how we find creative ways to get music back into our is located at the two web sites listed below. Watch for our Kid's Talk Radio Podcast of the "Head Drums Company". Taking mathematics to the level of a drum maker.

Kid's Are Learning about Old Time Radio
Joe Lich, Creativity in Education
An Interview with Bob Barboza.
If you are interested in how they made radio programs from "radio's golden age", you might want to take a class from Bob Barboza. His class is filled with many entertaining and educational topics for fans and student newcomers of nostalgic / old-time radio shows. He is teaching his kids how to make special sound effects that are turning heads.
Bob has found a creative way to use computers, FileMaker Pro 8.5, Roland?s Handsonic 10 and Handsonic 15's, and a new sound effects lab. With the program Database Projects for Kid's-Kid's Radio Edition; his students are making their own percussion instruments to help with creating special sound effects. Barboza's creative uses of FileMaker, percussion instruments and the Handsonic hardware has kids lining up at the door to take his after school class that meets twice a week.
Bob has a unique way of integrating mathematics and science into all of his training programs. Kids are discovering that they can explore math, science, technology, and music all at the same time. Students have ample opportunities to perform at family reading nights, elementary school mini music tours, and at end of the year kid's peace builder concerts. Barboza is a member of he Lights on After School Program. He is always looking for ways to keep kids off the streets during peak hours of juvenile crime.
Barboza use of the new technology tool called the Music Pad Pro is helping kids to improve their oral reading skills. The Music Pad Pro was originally designed to serve as an electronic music stand. It holds all the music the kids need in one memory bank. Barboza took this tool one step further by turning it into an old time radio teleprompter. This plays a big roll in increasing his students oral reading skills for radio news reading and kid made commercials.
It is just amazing to see how much oral reading kids are doing while they write and read radio commercials. Barboza reports that oral reading, reading comprehension, and vocabulary skills are on the rise. It is great to see all the creative ways Barboza mixes the talents of special needs kids and gifted kids side by side. This mainstream technique makes a lot of sense. Kids are helping each other because Barboza is recognizing where kids are gifted. He reported that kids with special needs are also gifted. Good teachers will find where they are gifted and run with that.
Last year Bob Barboza and Ronnie Ciago went on a musical tour of the Sam Ash and Guitar Center music stores getting people excited about the Music Pad Pro, Handsonic, creative uses of Paste Cymbals, Vic Furth drumsticks and mallets, and they played on the world greatest drum sets.
It is difficult to work with kids in the visual and performing art during school. Most schools are working on meeting their average yearly progress goals and the arts have to take a back seat. Barboza feels that we need more balance in the schools. He is suggesting that we creatively use the time before and after school to keep the arts alive in our schools. To learn more about creative ways to get both teachers and student excited about teaching and learning visit our other websites.
We asked Barboza what the future looked like. He said that he wanted to have the schools in the United States share information and technology with the kids on the Cabo Verde Islands. He wants to do an Internet Kid's Radio broadcast to the kids on the Cabo Verde Islands. These are the islands were his father was born. Barboza has a special computer program that he uses to teach himself Portuguese. He studies Portuguese while he practices the drums. It is a form of Super Learning. He plans on trying this with his students in his after school program. His idea is that when kids are practicing drum rudiments they are learning Portuguese words as they sing the drum parts. It is just about finding ways to get yourself and kids excited about learning. I think you can tell from the photographs that we are all having a good time.
In the early days of the computer industry Tom Snyder of the company Tom Snyder Productions had kids from America contact kids in Russia. He created a special program called "The Other Side". Barboza was moved by this and always wanted kids in the US to communicate with kids on the Cabo Verde Islands.
How did the other side work?
Two teams of students in Grades 5-12, assume leadership of two countries in a tense and risky world (sounds like our own). The mission is to build a bridge connecting the Left Side and the Right Side, which are separated by water. Students must work together, competitively or collaboratively, to solve the problem and, at the same time, share the world's limited resources. Communication and decision-making skills are required in this endeavor. With each new game, codes are changed and fuel is relocated to provide variety and more opportunities to learn how to create a peaceful world. One exciting new feature is the ability to play against other teams across the Internet. The $79.95 package comes with two Macintosh/Windows hybrid CD-ROMs, so teams can compete through a local area network. The curriculum guide in the back of the support book makes it easier to align the material to standards and district curriculum goals. In particular, if you teach global policy, the Cold War, trade agreements, treaties, or ethics in leadership, then The Other Side is one program you should examine.
Barboza designed the first version of Database Projects for Kid's-Kid's Talk Radio in 2005. He wanted students to collaborate with other students over the Internet so he started collaborating with Jeff Hoffman a FileMaker expert. Hoffman and Barboza later helped to form the School Tools Design Group. Now they feel they have the right team to get the job done. Barboza will not stop until he makes it possible for to share his student?s projects with kids in different Portuguese speaking countries. We will start with The Cabo Verde Islands and then work our way to Brazil and then Portugal.

| The Spoken Word Projects: Rhythms From Around The World |
Super School Music Projects-Spoken
Word
Music is a very important part
of Super School Software. In 2007-2008,
we will start our new spoken word and
music project for kids in grades 3 through 12. We want to work with kids and teachers from
around the world. If you are from the
private sector and you feel that your work can make a positive contribution to
kids, we want to hear from you. Our goal
is to find alternative ways for kids to read and tell stories. We want to learn more about the rhythms of
the world and the stories that go with them.
We will offer you a wonderful opportunity to publish your work on the
PNN Personal News Network. If we like
your story, we will have the senior sound engineers from Kid’s Talk Radio put
sounds effects to your story.
