| Take a trip down the Amazon River. |
|
Who wants to go on the ultimate science and technology field trip?
We want to take 25 kids, 5 teachers, and three scientists to the Amazon Jungle. Who wants to go? This trip is all about getting teachers and kids excited about learning. Our master teachers are Doug Stoup and Bob Barboza.
Students will have an opportunity to study technology, science journalism, biology, chemistry, and participate in Jr. Medical School Projects.
What can we learn from the Amazon Jungle?
Impact of Amazon drought
In 2005, parts of the Amazon basin experienced the worst drought in 100 years,[43] and there were indications that 2006 could have been a second successive year of drought.[44] A 23 July 2006 article in the UK newspaper The Independent reported Woods Hole Research Center results showing that the forest in its present form could survive only three years of drought. Scientists at the Brazilian National Institute of Amazonian Research argue in the article that this drought response, coupled with the effects of deforestation on regional climate, are pushing the rainforest towards a "tipping point" where it would irreversibly start to die. It concludes that the forest is on the brink of being turned into savanna or desert, with catastrophic consequences for the world's climate. According to the WWF, the combination of climate change and deforestation increases the drying effect of dead trees that fuels forest fires. Our students will work side-by-side with scientists, Bob Barboza and Doug Stoup. Students will have an opportunity to fall in love with the study of science and technology. Our Kid's Talk Radio Science and Jr. Medical School programs are designed to get students excited about learning. We know you will have more questions.
