Portfolios and IEP’s a Winning Combination

Special Education Portfolios

When special education students move from one school district to another they rarely bring along a copy of their IEP with a student portfolio.

Students with special needs could benefit from a well written IEP and a student portfolio designed it help to inform a teacher’s instruction.

The parents in my special education program appreciate seeing the selected work samples and student journals demonstrating growth over time. The authentic work samples in a variety of areas academic areas helps to give parents a deeper understanding of what is going on in the academic program.

Before electronic portfolios were an interracial part of my special education program, I used student journals and a three ring binder that served as my student portfolio. My new electronic portfolios allow me to review students work just before I write an IEP. I can share portfolio conference information at IEP staffing meetings with teachers. My new portfolios allow me to share authentic assessment, informal assessment, and student work samples, general education work samples, homework, and other documents/exhibits that will help me to write a better IEP.

My goals and objectives for all of my IEP get reviewed during the general education reporting periods. This happens three times a year. I have portfolio conferences with my students at then end of every two weeks. The portfolio conferences help to inform my instruction.

Special Education Portfolio Questions and Answers

How do parents get copies of student work? I use a combination of traditional and high tech portfolios. I keep digital samples of the portfolios from year to year. At the end of the year and or at an annual IEP review I give parents the journals and traditional portfolio. If the parents have computers I give them a PDF portfolio. Parents in my action research project can see their child’s electronic portfolio online.

How do students benefit from portfolio assessment? Student participate in portfolio conferences about there weekly tests and writing samples, math projects, spelling tests, and oral reading projects.

How are portfolio integrated into the IEP programs? We use a variety of electronic IEP programs at Super School University. All of our electronic portfolios are utilized when we are completing the IEP’s Present Levels of Instruction Forms. Viewing an electronic

The Super School Portfolio Assessment Kit

Special Education Solutions

The Portfolio Assessment Kit is a powerful tool for presenting evidence of student progress at an IEP meeting.  Often times parents of special needs students don’t get the opportunity to see samples of their students work over time.  They sometimes just hear reports of what their children cannot do or about the subjects they a failing in school.  It is a known fact that students with special needs do poorly on standardized tests.  Portfolio help to demonstrate what the child can do when tests and assignments are modified to meet their specific needs.  Electronic portfolio can play a beneficial roll in the special education program.  Let us show you how we use them in our programs.

What is an E-Portfolio? Why are they being used a Super School?
e-Portfolios
What is in your portfolio?
What is an E- Portfolio?

An electronic portfolio, also known as an e-portfolio or digital portfolio, is a collection of electronic evidence assembled and managed by a user, usually on the Web. Such electronic evidence may include inputted text, electronic files such as Microsoft Word and Adobe PDF files, images, multimedia, blog entries, and hyperlinks. E-portfolios are both demonstrations of the user's abilities and platforms for self-expression, and, if they are online, they can be maintained dynamically over time. Some e-portfolio applications permit varying degrees of audience access, so the same portfolio might be used for multiple purposes.

As a photographer I could always appreciate the benefits of using a portfolio for store my best photographs.  As a teacher I discovered the full benefits us using a portfolio to help to improve my instruction.

An e-portfolio can be seen as a type of learning record that provides actual evidence of achievement. Learning records are closely related to the Learning Plan, an emerging tool that is being used to manage learning by individuals, teams, communities of interest, and organizations. To the extent that at Personal Learning Environment captures and displays a learning record, it also might be understood to be an electronic portfolio.

After talking to portfolio using educators from around the country I was convinced that we were on the right track.  Plus, portfolios made a lot of sense to parents.

E-portfolios have an edge over the traditional, paper-based variety because there is a considerable increase in the range and quality of services that can be provided to individuals and the community. Students are able to apply to college or to businesses showing these complete examples of their work; something much richer than test scores and grades. The development of the electronic job market has seen a rise in the usage of e-portfolios. Organizations can considerably cut costs by recruiting online and, due to the growth of the Internet, are able to potentially find better job matches online than through conventional recruitment mediums.

Every teacher that writes an IEP for a student with special needs should include a student portfolio at every IEP meeting.  My parents thank me for including portfolio exhibits.  They could see that their children were making progress and they could see it first hand.

E-portfolios enable the individual to be evaluated on various levels. E-portfolios highlight all of an individual's skill sets. Although academics are extremely important, an individual's work experience and extracurricular activities are also highlighted, allowing the reader to understand the different dimensions of the individual. E-portfolios empower individuals to connect their formal education, work experience, and personal activities. E-portfolios can also aid professors or K-12 educator to follow the progress of their students which allows them to evaluate their own performance. Individuals are not limited to one portfolio; they can create different portfolios to represent different aspects of their life to fit the needs of different audiences or potential employers. Schools from the age of 13 make E-portfolios for future needs.  At Super School we discovered the benefits of using E-portfolios early on in our special needs classrooms.  Later we introduced E-portfolios to our gifted and talented program.  At present we are using E-portfolios in our new distance learning programs.
